This is the website of Dan and Ploy. I am a British citizen whilst my wife, Ploy, is Thai. We have lived and worked in Thailand, U.K. and Singapore and we have now lived in Ontario, Canada for over a year. On this website I will write about things and places which interest us and I hope will also interest you. Please e-mail us your comments or suggestions or even criticisms on daniel@danploy.com. The site was last updated on 29th June 2008 (Diary)
(This Blog is a diary of my day to day thoughts and opinions. Please feel free to comment if you wish.... ) (I am currently studying an MA in Art History with the Open University in the UK. In this section can be found some of my essays from previous courses, as well as some thoughts on Modernism and Formalism, my particular interest..... ) (We lived in Singapore for nearly three years. Here are some photographs of Singapore that perhaps show a different side to the island than the high-rise buildings so often portrayed. Images of Golden Mile in Beach Road, the Thai village of Singapore and a cluster of Thai food supermarkets, shops, karaoke bars and Thai restaurants..............) (Here you can read about Ploy and myself, our lives before and after we met, how we met, our travels together and the countries we have lived in, our families, our cars, our houses and the things we like and dislike.....) (This is my art history essay for the Open University A424 course on Barna da Siena's enigmatic painting, The Mystic Marriage of Saint Catherine...... ) (Giovanni Martinelli is for me the greatest tenor of the recorded era: In this section I have gathered all the information I can find on him, Biographical, CD reviews, Articles, Newpaper reports, Gala and concerts reviews and appearances.................) (For me the human voice is the instrument that gives me the most pleasure and excitement and I have spent most of my life collecting unusual and exceptional voices from around the world. I am no expert, I cannot read music or play any musical instrument (or sing in tune for that matter); I just listen and enjoy. In this section I would like to share with you some heart stopping moments from other singers, not just operatic but from a variety of genres: I have tried to include a few audio clips where possible. Singers I talk about include: Franco Bonisolli, Mario Filippeschi, Luciano Pavarotti, Solomon King, William Matteuzzi, Joe Longthorne, Mario del Monaco, Mandy Patinkin, Emma Calve, Ivan Rebroff and Daniel Barioni.I hope you will find the selections suitably eclectic, controversial and interesting...............) (This section contains a record of our holidays in Thailand, together with some, hopefully, useful links on Thailand, and some information and opinions about living in Thailand..........) (Extracts from my 'Novel in Progress' as well as other short stories and scribbles....) (I emigrated to Canada from Singapore in November 2006, and Ploy joined me just before Christmas the same year. We live in a town called Waterloo, near the centre of the Great Lakes area and approximately 2 hours drive from Niagara Falls. On this page I record some photos and information about the city and the area.....) (I left school at 16 year of age. I knew two things, I didn't want to stay at school and do A-levels and I was good at most sciences, particularly astronomy. So I ended up falling into electronics, which has now been my profession for over 30 years: for the majority of this time I have specialised in video. Having been employed for so long in this field, I rather felt I wasn't doing it justice to not have a page on my website dedicated to it. So here it is.....) (Places we have visited, from Penang to Japan to North America..... ) (Most laptops only have an in-built microphone for recording audio clips so I had to find some device that would convert analog audio from, say the tape outputs of my amplifier, into USB or firewire (as my laptop has these interfaces), or maybe a PCMCIA card that does the same job. A hunt around the Internet and also around Simlim Square (a big electrical market here in Singapore) came up with the Griffin Technology PowerWave Box............... )
